This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My ESL students are not the world's best writers but they love to talk and share about their experiences. We always do a big autobiographical writing project with a timeline of all their important events: first pet, elementary graduation, first trip to a big amusement park like Disneyland, etc.

My students are immigrants with hard working parents living in a small city in Southern California.

They love working on projects that show their artistic side and allow them to use technology because like every teen and pre-teen in the U.S. they want to be connected to their peers. They also love when anyone will just listen to them even if they are shy about using their new language. When we are reading the stories in their textbook, they enjoy having the opportunity to make a personal connection to the story.

My Project

The 5 Flip Video Camcorders we need for the project "If You Were There With Me..." will allow my students to overcome their difficulties with getting everything down on paper. Most of them are reluctant writers because they are afraid of being judged and the written word seems so permanent and indelible. This will be our springboard to get to the writing that is required for their middle school ESL portfolio without the usual struggle to get it down on paper.

Recording their personal stories of the three most important events in their lives so far will give my students the chance to make their voices heard.

It show them that in the United States we may all come from different backgrounds, but we all count as part of the fabric that makes the U.S. the country that it is.
