Hello!! My classroom is organized and designed to create a stress-free and predictable classroom. Each routine and procedure created with my students’ independence in mind for this is my number one priority. My students are learning foundational functional skills. For example, many students may come to my classroom with only a few words and unable to complete tasks without the support of an adult and leave my classroom teaching their peers using full complete sentences. There aren’t enough words to describe my love and passion for the students in my classroom. I believe that regardless of teaching/communicative style all students deserve to be loved and treated with dignity and respect. My students are truly unique by the way they show their love. It may be loud but gentle, soft but mighty or in your face.
Multi-sensory approach is a very successful teaching style for young learners. Creating experiences help strengthen foundational and functional skills. I like to add scent and texture when appropriate to help foster these experiences. This past school year, I received a student who introduced me to a whole new sensory approach than what I was used to. This student needed me to create an experience with the use of flashlight and light boxes. One of my co-workers created a small one for us to use. The joy from my student began to light up the room as he explored this new experience. This light was contagious. Other students wanted to have a chance but the box was too small. By add a larger light box to my classroom, my students learning will be enhanced and much more memorable. I look forward to see their eyes light up as the room lights go off and the learning starts.
