My Students

My students are the ones that Curtis Mayfield wrote about when he wrote the lyrics to the song, "People Get Ready." They're the descendants of individuals that Gil Scott Heron sings about in his song, "95 South, All of the Places We've Been." They're learning the value of keeping their "Eye on the Prize," and how to hold onto their achievable dreams. They're the ones who will continue to "march down 'Freedom Highway,'" and hopefully, find the peace that we're fighting for. They're the ones, who will gain the "Respect," that Aretha Franklin sings about. They will witness that, "The Times Are A-Changin," like Bob Dylan penned around 1964. They're the ones who have the chance to find meaning in Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." They're the ones that Alicia Keys sings about in her song, "Underdog." When I look at them, I see and hear Medgar Evers, Dorothy Height, Marcus Garvey, Lyda Newman, Harry Belafonte, Shirley Chisholm, Rosa Parks, Henry Brown, Ida B. Wells, Martin Luther King, Ruby Bridges, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Frederick Douglass.

My Project

For Black History Month, my elementary school comes together to create an Interactive Living Museum, which brings students, parents, administration, and community together to honor the past and inspire the future. The Black History Month Theme for 2022 is "Black Health and Wellness." So our focus is to bring families together to celebrate, educate, and raise awareness of resources around health and healthy choices. We are teaching our students about activists like John Lewis and encouraging them to be the change that they hope to see in the world. The "If Not Us, Then Who? If Not Now, Then When?" T-shirts personalized with our school logo will spread the message throughout the community that we are united. Our children are learning how to be peaceful activists at a young age by promoting Black History Month. The positive vibe that we are sending into our community is, "A difference is often made by one person who is fed up and is willing to act." (Condoleezza Rice)

My students will learn the lesson, "We need in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers." (Bayard Rustin)
They will also learn, "If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl. But by all means, keep moving." (Martin Luther King, Jr.)
