Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a dedicated National Board Certified Education Specialist working in a high school setting.

Every week, my students with exceptional needs participate in IDance, where 50–60 students from diverse backgrounds come together to dance, laugh, build friendships, and mentor one another.

From hip-hop and rap to country and rock, students practice communication, teamwork, and social skills through a shared love of music. Students are participating in hands-on learning within an interactive setting.

With a Fuji instant camera, extra film, and a picture frame, my students will become photographers and storytellers who document inclusion in action. Working alongside peer mentors, they will learn to operate a camera, choose subjects, frame photographs, and capture meaningful moments during IDance. These activities will provide authentic opportunities to make decisions, take turns, communicate ideas, and solve problems together.

Instant photography makes the learning process tangible. Students can examine each printed photograph, discuss what they notice, and decide what to try differently in their next picture. They will explore how distance, positioning, and timing affect an image, then apply what they discover. With guidance and accessible support, each student will have opportunities to contribute by taking photographs, directing a shot, or selecting images to display.

Students will choose photographs that tell the story of friendship and belonging and use the frame to share their work with our school community. Through words, gestures, or their communication systems, they will reflect on their choices and explain what makes these moments meaningful.

These materials will support an experiential learning project that connects photography, creative expression, and practical communication beyond the classroom. My students will build skills through doing, reflecting, and trying again while taking an active role in telling their own stories.
