I am the 7th grade science teacher at an inner-city, high-needs school. Our school is an Expeditionary Learning school and was developed as a program of Outward Bound. Our method of instruction revolves around theme-based learning expeditions. These expeditions often incorporate several field studies with hands-on, discovery-based learning.

Particularly in a community like our own, giving students opportunities for engagement in positive activities is incredibly important. If they were able to be constantly reminded of a time when they were an active learner, or a time when they were truly enjoying the outdoors, it would certainly boost self-image. Unfortunately, we do not have cameras available for the 7th graders to take on their field studies. Therefore, we cannot document our students making meaningful discoveries outside of the classroom.

Having even just one camera would help to create connections between students, the community, and the outdoors. Those pictures on display in the classroom would be a constant reminder of those connections made on field studies.

Your help will enable our students to continue with their in-depth studies and promote active learning by using current technology for years to come. Our students are fascinated by digital cameras and they love being able to document what they are doing and seeing. If we are chosen, we can't wait to send you picture proof of your good deeds at work.
