“I pretend, therefore I am. I pretend, therefore I know. I pretend, therefore I am not afraid

I am a pre-k teacher at Williams Township School. We serve 3,4, and 5 year old children with developmental, physical and cognitive delays. We are a low income school and our funds are very limited. I would like to add some dramatic play materials to our room.
In dramatic play, preschoolers use speech and body language to become storytellers of pretend events. Through dramatic play, which is also commonly called pretend or fantasy play, children continue to build understandings of their world. Dramatic play is an imitation of reality. Children create play themes and act them out by participating in various roles. By doing so, they are able to imitate the physical world and human relationships. Research suggests that engaging in dramatic play can have beneficial effects on children's cognitive development, learning, peer relationships, and emotional well-being on throughout adulthood. Researchers have also concluded that children who actively participate in dramatic play during preschool and early elementary years are advanced in intellectual development, score higher on tests of imagination and creativity, and have an enhanced ability to think inventively. By providing these materials you can really mold a child's life. Play is the most important activity of young children because it is during play that children are at their most competent. I am writing this proposal to add a Shopping Center to our housekeeping area. The Shopping center will be set up for themes at different times during the year. We have some costurmes and we have been collecting other materials to complete the themes. It will be a grocery store, post office, beauty salon, doctor's office, police station, veterinarian office, bankers office and much more. There is a chalkboard attached where the children can develop writing skills as they play. We would also like a set of pretend play wooden cell phones. These are realistic cell phones that ring and have dial tones. They play back three messages. These items would add many hours of fun and language development to our classroom of special students. Thanks so much for considering this project.
