I Have Too Many Books, Said No One Ever

Help me give my students an increased variety of books to meet their needs.

My Students

My students are a whole mashup of middle school students. While classified as a low SES school, we welcome students that cover the gamut of public education: wealthy, middle income, inter-generational poverty, in-transition, and refugee. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is evident every day and more apparent as the school year continues: increased apathy, increased violence, increased need for counseling services, and increased negative social media interactions. Students are hurting socially, emotionally, and academically. As a former English teacher and our school's current librarian, I know that reading is part of the answer to support students' needs.

My students need books to cope with anxiety, to escape, to quiet chaos, to advance, to achieve, to relieve stress, to inspire, to build empathy; in short, books will help them deal with life.

I want to continue building our school's resources to address these needs.

My Project

Some students need the sociality of a book club; some students need the information to fuel their interests; some students need fantasy to escape to other worlds; some students need to see themselves in books; some students need emotional support; some students simply need to find their book suggestion on the shelves. There are so many academic, emotional, and social obligations that educators are currently addressing with students. Books hug, bolster, thrill, and prop up students--sometimes in ways others can't.

I firmly believe that there is a book for every student in every circumstance.

By donating to this project, you will help our school strengthen our collection and offer additional support for middle school students right now and for years to come.
