My students need a comfortable community and learning seating area for the multiple daily lessons, our daily morning meetings, and conflict resolution. They also need high interest books to get them excited about reading this year!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Yes, the students at my school represent historically underserved groups; ninety-two percent are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and for more than half, English is not their first language. But I’m not telling you this to elicit pity or sympathy. Rather, I’m saying this because these statistics show that our students are truly inspiring! While speaking another language at home and representing diverse populations is on the one hand a precious gift, it also presents daily challenges for the students at my school. Yet, despite this, the students show up each day. It is our responsibility to provide them a safe place to learn, grow, problem-solve, and thrive.
The thing is, students are innately and intensely curious about the world in which they live.
They are pioneers and explorers, ready to discover new things. They want to know about who they are and why they are. They want to get lost in a book and journey to new places, whether it’s another country, a civil rights protest, or Hogwart’s. These learning experiences are extremely empowering. Providing them with these tools and opportunities is also simply a matter of equity. Our students don’t just deserve these educational experiences -- it is their right as children.
My Project
Perhaps the heart and soul of instruction and growth in my classroom is the community meeting space where together students and I learn, grow, share, take risks, solve problems, and laugh. We start and end our days here, building community, and for much of the time in between, spend time here learning.
My 5th graders, while growing as scholars and empathetic people, are also quite literally growing and getting bigger!
A significant part of their day is spent on the rug, but their growing bodies can make this time uncomfortable. Bringing their clunky chairs back and forth to the rug several times a day wastes precious moments of instructional and learning time, causes distractions and side conversations, and can also be unsafe! These BackJack chairs will make their time spent on the rug far more comfortable, allowing them to focus all of their attention on the learning and growing that happens on the rug, instead of on their growing bodies and aching backs.
They also need some high interest books at their levels to get them hooked to reading! My students this year love sports and athletes and these sport themed graphic novels are sure to reel them into the magical world of reading!
