The second graders in our class epitomize excitement for learning. They love coming to school everyday! We are a group of 25 English Language Learners in a Title I school. All of these students are eligible for free lunch.

Many of the students in our class are struggling readers. Mastering reading means that energy is mostly focused on comprehension, not on decoding- or "sounding-out" words. When more energy is spent on decoding, meaning is lost and frustration skyrockets. My students need to master sight words and word families in order to become competent readers.

Because they are English Language Learners and many of them are first-generation Americans, they are eager for extra support in English Language development. Unfortunately, they often can't get the support at home that they need. To support them in their learning, my students need word family magnets, word family flip books, a listen and learn word family activity program, and a sight word sentence builder kit to practice sight words and word families. Listening and group center materials to practice sight words and word families will help them master the skills they need to improve their reading and writing. They will be able to keep up with their English-dominant peers and become even more encouraged to learn. It has a snowball effect!

Your support will help ensure that my students will improve not only their reading and writing skills, but also become more motivated learners. At this young age it is so critical to capitalize on their curiosity for new concepts and words. Their energy and focus can be spent on new vocabulary and intriguing concepts because they can read!
