Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of thirteen special needs boys and girls ages five to nine (Kindergarten to 4th grade). The class consist of 60% Hispanic and 40% other (African American, Asian, Caucasian, etc). Of the 60%, one-third of the parents are limited and do not speak English at home. The average household is below poverty level and unable to contribute to the extra needs of the classroom.
My students love to listen to books and read along with them.
My classroom has a child's kitchen, a reading nook, magnet board with letters, dress up clothes and several other areas that encourage exploration and learning. However, we do have a limited number of books on CD.
Generally, I have my students for three years. The limited amount of books the classroom has have been read and reread. I would like to give my students a variety of genres to encourage their love of reading even when that is an area is a challenge.
My Project
My students face many challenges such as physical, cognitive and academic. Some of them are non-verbal or have limited language skills. With these challenges, my students have difficulty learning to read. When they listen to stories being read aloud, they are engaged and excited! My students are led into a world of learning.
Reading allows my students to escape and explore the world around them, use their imagination in a fantasy realm and learn about their favorite animals.
The materials in this project will allow my students to read along in their book while listening to the CDs. In doing this, they are increasing their knowledge and reading skills. I want my students to be excited about reading as I am!
