This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school district,I work with students who are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to have them appreciate themselves and each other. My students have been dismissed by others as not being able to learn, and it's crucial to let them know that they are capable of learning and succeeding.
Every week, I see all over 500 students in the school for art.
We work hard to create and we need some extra support this year. Our budget this year has been halved. Part of it is allocated to the music program. Having received nothing last year, we are working with very little.
My Project
Pencils are beginning to run low in my studio. I've mostly stopped policing pencils, and let students take pencils to class when they need to, but this policy has taken a toll on the art room.
It's not uncommon for other teachers to send students to me to ask for pencils.
I mean, isn't the art studio everyone's supply closet? But that's another story for another time. My middle school students are asking for realistic drawing practice, and not having pencils really gets in the way of that.
When I ask my school for pencils, I get a dozen a month. 12 pencils. I see 500+ students a week, 12 pencils won't cut it.
I'm asking for so many pencils so I can continue my policy of not being stingy on pencils, and treat my students like they're treasured and not a bother.
