I teach an amazing group of kindergarten through third grade English Language Learners who make me laugh every day. My multilingual students are motivated to learn English because they want to participate in class and communicate with their friends. I also teach middle school students in after school clubs called The Dragon Kids.
The Dragon Kids won NPR's Student Podcast Challenge 2020!
My students come to my ENL classes eager to learn, but also to feel cared for and have a safe space to express themselves. Every day I am excited to teach challenging and fun lessons to ELLs who love learning. I know my teaching is making a difference because my students have a great time in my class, and loving school is more important than anything else!
My Project
New media events mean a new dragon is needed. The Dragon Kids Podcast have been busy making a new podcast and contributing their ideas to a new podcast curriculum due out soon...stay tuned for that!
The Dragon Kids were recently interviewed, wearing matching dragon hoodies, by W Kamau Bell for his show on CNN "United Shades of America" which will air sometime this summer.
The last question Kamau asked the Dragon Kids was "Where can I get one of those hoodies?" Hey, we can't help it if everyone wants to wear them!
Profits from the hoodies will go towards field trips around NYC and restaurant reviews so the Dragon Kids can talk about the places they visit on their podcast and for our podcast club and to pay for the hosting platform to upload episodes to iTunes. They also learn many financial literacy skills such as marketing, advertising, design, selling and even acting for their own commercials on their podcast.
Which design will win out - the spine-chilling, terrifying dragon or the convivial, blithe dragon?
