My students love coming to guitar class. They are always want to play, learn new techniques, and new songs. The class I am targeting for this grant have especially talented, responsible students. Some of my students are mainstreamed Special Needs.
My student's families support our guitar program as best they can.
Most families are on some kind of public assistance. They come from many diverse cultures. Each country represented in our school values music education. Unfortunately, they are unable to afford even the least expensive guitars so their child can practice outside of class.
My Project
In order to have my parents involved with their child's music education, my project will entail five components..
Each child in the class will receive a practice guitar to keep at home for the school year.
Guitars will be returned in June and redistributed in September.
Students will keep a personal practice log of the days and the minutes/hours they practice. Parents or guardians will be asked to initial each entry to certify the student has indeed practiced as indicated in the log. The parent will then give an assessment of the child's progress based on the same rubrics used in Guitar class.
#4 Concert Ready!
#3 Child knows the music and can teach it to others.
#2 Child can play the music but needs more time to practice.
#1 Child is struggling and needs additional teacher help.
Students will bring their logs to Guitar class and enter their hours for the week into an Excel spreadsheet, on one of the two new computers we already received from Donors Choose. There will be contests to see who practiced the most this week; over the weekend; over the month. Prizes will be awarded.
At the end of the semester, parents and students will complete a survey of the experience. The data collected will be used to determine if this project did indeed make a positive/negative impact on parent involvement in their child's musical studies.
