This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are supporting Chasing A Dream Foundation with this project to help a child who is sick by providing a hospital backpack. When a family is given the news that their child has a life-threatening illness, and they need to go to the hospital immediately, packing a few comfort items is often not a priority. We are providing a hospital backpack complete with an iPad in a drop-proof case, a soft glow-in-the-dark blanket, a cozy neck pillow, and fruit-flavored Chapsticks.

For a child initially admitted with cancer, cystic fibrosis, or other life-threatening illness or disability, we will provide these items to help them through the long hours of hospitalization and treatment.

Just imagine being a child and having to remain still for hours on end while undergoing treatments. The iPad provides much-needed distraction and comfort to all age groups.

I can engage in such fruitful conversations with my students about themselves and the world around them. They are such critical thinkers and I can truly tell they will be leaders in any careers they pursue. Within my school community, students are always looking for ways to make an impact. My students would engage in a kindness workshop with a focus on social-emotional learning by providing handwritten notes. They will also learn about the importance of serving and supporting others of all ages and needs in their community.
