My students sit as a group and follow along in their books while we read together chapter by chapter. My students then discuss the chapter we just read. After we have finished the entire book, I create a writing prompt for my students and they spend the next 2 -3 weeks writing a five paragraph essay, either Expository or Argumentative, based off of the book. It has been amazing for me to read these essays after the students have completed them!\r\n\r\nAs soon as I told my students that we had a new book funded and coming to us, they jumped on their laptops and started looking for an explanation of what the book was about. We started reading this one as soon as it arrived!\r\n\r\nAll of the books that I choose to place for donation are books that my students have chosen off the list of recommended book list; Florida's B.E.S.T. Standards: sample texts by benchmark. These are books that our students could possibly see on the state required assessments. Being that our classroom consists of students of every ability level, that are preparing to take their FAST Reading and BEST Writing assessments, I feel that trying to familiarize them with books that they may see on a high stakes assessment will better prepare them for what is to come. The essays that we write after the books have been read is part of this preparation.\r\n\r\nIt's been wonderful to see the excitement these books have brought to my students' and the literacy that has developed throughout my classroom. All students discuss with each other the happenings in the book. This book, They Call Her Molly Pitcher, has aligned well with our current Unit on the Revolutionary War. The student have already dove into this book and are examing the story through a new perspective which allows them to understand a new aspect of the war that they are already studying. Whenever we have down time throughout the day, I catch students working together and rereading to find answers to the questions they may still have. \r\n\r\nIt's been wonderful to see the excitement these books have brought to my students' literacy and learning. I have many parents who try and donate extra supplies and snacks throughout the year. Unfortunately, it seems no matter how many supplies and/ or snacks that are donated, we can never make it through the entire school year. \r\n\r\nYour donation of disinfecting wipes and tissues will help to keep our classroom and noses clear and hopefully keep those flu germs away! The bandages in the classroom are always helpful so students do not miss valuable learning time just to run to the clinic to get a boo-boo fixed. The break-away (safety) lanyards will be used for student who break the school issued lanyard, but cannot afford to pay for a replacement. The snacks will be used for my students, when 1/2 way through the morning are having tummy grumbles because it is not yet lunch time. I sometimes think this is their favorite time of the day; what will she pull out of the closet today! \r\n\r\nI am beyond grateful for the fulfillment of this project and having new supplies and snacks for my students. Manipulating the number stacks allows them to see what numbers and combinations of numbers are equal. They are able to touch and move the numbers around. When they are working in groups, the conversations about the how and why they think their equation is valid is very rich. They are using the vocabulary and proving their thinking. I am seeing more success with their addition and subtraction skills already. I cannot wait to start using them for place value in the next unit.
