Hoot’s in the Pellet?

Help me give my students an opportunity to explore the owl food chain and fall in love with science!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Owl pellets will provide my students with an exciting, hands-on opportunity to experience real scientific investigation in a way that textbooks simply cannot replicate. My students love science and are naturally curious about the world around them, constantly asking questions and wanting to understand how things work. This activity taps directly into that enthusiasm and transforms their curiosity into meaningful learning. As they carefully dissect owl pellets, students will sort, examine, and identify tiny bones, reconstruct skeletons, and determine what the owl ate. Through this process, they will explore food chains, predator-prey relationships, ecosystems, and the flow of energy in a food web in an authentic and engaging way.

Beyond the science content, this experience strengthens important academic skills such as observation, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and data collection.

Students will practice making predictions, recording evidence, and drawing conclusions based on their findings—just like real scientists. For many of them, this may be their first true hands-on lab investigation, and it will spark excitement and confidence in their ability to explore and understand the natural world.

This opportunity will give them a powerful, memorable experience that will last a lifetime. It is the kind of learning that students talk about for years and remember long after they leave the classroom. By engaging in authentic scientific discovery, they will not only deepen their understanding of ecosystems but also develop a lasting appreciation for inquiry and exploration. Experiences like this encourage students to see themselves as scientists and inspire them to become lifelong learners who remain curious about the world around them.
