Hooks, Lines, and Life Lessons: Learning to Fish

Help me give my students a class set of fishing rods, so they can discover the joy of fishing, build confidence through learning a new skill, and stay engaged with a positive outdoor activity in our rural community.

My Project

My sophomores are full of endless energy, eager to learn, and respond positively whenever they are actively engaged in hands-on experiences. In a digital age that constantly competes for their focus, they desperately need exposure to outdoor activities that pull them away from screens and connect them with the real world. Living in a rural district with limited options for teenagers, my goal is to introduce them to a meaningful, lifelong hobby that gives them a healthy, accessible way to cure boredom and stay active.

Having their own fishing rod allows every student to dive directly into active learning rather than sitting back and watching; this skill will help them channel their energy into physical coordination and patience, while also giving them a safe, hands-on space where making mistakes, like a tangled line, is just part of the learning process.

This is an opportunity to not just teach my students a new skill, but also one to help them overcome the fear of failure and build true self confidence.
