Honoring Our Heroes with Literature and Learning

Help me give my students books to provide meaningful opportunities to learn about veterans, honor their service, and understand their sacrifices.

My Project

As the wife of a retired Air Force veteran who served our country for 25 years, I understand the sacrifices, dedication, and commitment that military families make in service to our nation. Throughout my husband's career, our family had the opportunity to live and travel around the world while he served, giving me a unique perspective on the importance of honoring veterans and preserving their stories.

I am eager to help my third grade students develop a deeper understanding of Veterans Day through meaningful literature and authentic learning experiences.

With a class set of The Wall, students will participate in shared reading experiences that encourage thoughtful discussions about remembrance, sacrifice, citizenship, and the importance of honoring those who have served our country. Students will strengthen their reading comprehension, writing, and critical thinking skills while learning about the significance of memorials and the stories they represent.

Students will also learn about the history and symbolism of the poppy through The Poppy Lady. To help bring this learning experience to life, my husband will visit our classroom to read The Poppy Lady and share photographs, military uniforms, and stories from his 25-year Air Force career around the world. Students will have the unique opportunity to ask questions, interview a veteran firsthand, and learn about service, leadership, and citizenship through real-life experiences.

Throughout the unit, students will write reflections, participate in discussions, and create thank-you letters to veterans. By combining literature, history, and personal connections, this project will help students develop empathy, gratitude, and a deeper appreciation for the men and women who have served our nation. These experiences will create lasting memories while helping students become thoughtful, informed, and respectful citizens.
