Your generosity has given my students a shared space where they can see, read, and practice the language we are learning.\r\n\r\nOur new whiteboard makes our learning targets visible and gives students clear models to follow as they practice writing. Students are reading our goals, copying words and sentences from the board, and using those examples to express their own ideas in English.\r\n\r\nDuring a recent lesson, we read about Frida Kahlo and Alma Thomas. Students wrote sentences on the whiteboard comparing and contrasting the two painters, sharing similarities and differences in their lives and artistic styles. Writing on the board gave them an opportunity to practice English and share their learning with classmates.\r\n\r\nStudents then created self-portraits and abstract portraits. Using sentence frames displayed on the whiteboard, they wrote about themselves and explained the meaning behind their artwork. Their writing shared feelings, family memories, cultural pride, and personal journeys.\r\n\r\nFor students who are still developing their English, having a model they can return to helps them participate and put their thoughts into words.
