Through these texts, students learned about sea turtle life cycles, habitats, adaptations, migration patterns, and conservation efforts while also strengthening important reading skills.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an active process. Students don't simply read a book and move on—we ask questions, discuss new learning, make connections, analyze text features, and use evidence from the text to support our thinking. The sea turtle books provided rich opportunities for students to practice nonfiction reading skills such as identifying main ideas, locating key details, using headings and captions, and learning domain-specific vocabulary.\r\n\r\nMany students were especially excited by the real-world science connections. Students who are naturally curious about animals loved learning about the challenges sea turtles face and were eager to share facts they discovered with their classmates. The combination of engaging nonfiction texts and hands-on science activities helped even reluctant readers become invested in learning more.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was watching students realize that reading can be a tool for discovery.
