Honey, I'm home Preschoolers Playing with Dolls

My students need a dollhouse, color coordinated doll house furniture, and felt to create clothes and materials for the dollhouse.

I'm an early childhood special education teacher and I teach in a blended preschool classroom in Illinois, which means I teach students both with and without special needs. My students have disabilities such as speech delays, physical handicaps, and autism.

Most of my students have very little language and the best way for them to learn new words and practice language is through play. A dollhouse is a great place for some to act out and role play their family life. Since this is familiar to them, they begin to increase their vocabulary as well as play with others. They love it! Unfortunately, our current dollhouse is limiting as some furniture is broken, the dollhouse is enclosed and difficult for more than one child to play in and it's hard for the children to recognize where the different furniture goes.

With a new (more open) dollhouse and color coded furniture, the children will be more attracted to the materials and begin to play more with their friends. Their language will inevitably increase and they'll have fun as they play with more focus and understanding. With felt we could even make some blankets for the beds and new clothes for the dolls. The new materials will bring new light to this center and create renewed interest in role playing with the dolls. The color coded furniture will also allow the children to create more purposeful play as they'll easily recognize furniture that goes together and therefore create more purposeful play schemes such as "cooking breakfast" or "bedtime".
