This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My students love graphic novels, and that section of our school library is always buzzing with activity. Although many people equate graphic novels with comic books, graphic novels help increase students' reading comprehension and are a great tool for teaching visual literacy because students have to infer a great deal of the stories from pictures. These are excellent tools for students who struggle with reading because the large numbers of images can be less intimidating for them. Becoming comfortable with the graphic novel format can help these same struggling students to gain confidence that may help them seek out more challenging texts in the future.
One of the most popular graphic novel series in my school library is the HiLo series by Judd Winick.
The kids love the stories about an alien that falls to Earth and the friends that he makes once he gets here. There is an amazing children's bookstore here in town, and a few months ago they sponsored a visit to our school by the author himself! The kids were pumped and the series has become even more popular since that visit. Of course, that now means that there are not enough copies to go around and some of the ones I did have are falling apart. I would love to have new copies of the books so that more students can enjoy them. Thank you for considering my project, and thank you for supporting DonorsChoose.org.
