My Students

Imagine taking a timed US history test written in Chinese. If you do not pass the test you have to take the class over again. The teacher wants to help you and gives you a 1000 page Chinese dictionary. It takes time to look up words and disrupts others who are testing near you. Is this a fair test?

My students face this every day.

My students come from all over the world to attend a regular public high school. My Asian students have electronic translators that are quick and easy to use. My Hispanic students have to use books that are heavy and cumbersome. Most of my Spanish students only look up one or two words because it is so difficult. When students borrow electronic Spanish English translators, they look up many words, complete their test faster and get better grades. My students work very hard to keep up with high school class work while learning English. Many of them also work after school because they need to help support their families.

My Project

By having electronic translators for my students to use, they will be able to work quicker while learning more English words. Translators help by instantly giving the Spanish word for an unknown English word. Students can use the translators in all their classes to help them understand what they read. At the same time, they will be learning new words in real life situations.

My students work hard to keep up with high school course work while learning English.

Many of their families struggle to make ends meet. Electronic translators will help them learn English faster and graduate from high school.
