Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district my students are faced with day to day challenges both in and out of the classroom. The 26 English Language Learners in my classroom, each unique in their on amazing way, comes to school everyday, enthusiastic, eager, and ready to learn new skills. Many of my students come from stressful backgrounds and home-lives, and they often talk about worries about what is to come. They tell me they want to work hard in school, so they can get good jobs, so that they are able to help their families. Despite having difficult backgrounds, my students are always up for new adventures, and tackle challenges head on, never giving up, always determined to succeed. My students have shown me time and time again that with the right opportunities they are able to thrive and overcome any obstacle that may be put in their path. I hope that by providing these opportunities and resources they will continue to encourage to push themselves to be the best that they can be.
My Project
My school has recently implemented a blended learning model and my students spend time every day using research-based computer programs to personalize their learning. These programs meet the students needs according to where they are academically, and through a personalized learning track work to help them excel in both math and reading. In order to utilize the programs effectively, students need quality headphones to not only hear the audio portion of the program but also to block out distractions from students working collaboratively at other centers. Currently, students get very frustrated when they are trying to work hard and focus, but can't do so because of the activity around them. They also spend lots of their time trying to find headphones that actually work, instead of focusing on the program. Through no fault of their own, their learning is disrupted. These headphones help students to concentrate and keep distractions to a minimum. The other important feature of these headphones is the microphone. ESL students need opportunities to speak, and practice their vocabulary without fear of what others will think. I have found programs that enable my ESL students to read out-loud to the computer, and then they can play back what they read in order to help them hear and practice speaking with their new English vocabulary. Having reliable headphones to use on a daily basis will cut down on distractions, and motivate my students to try their best every day to continue to improve.
