This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello! I teach in a very diverse school district where many of my students do not have the materials they need to succeed every day at school.

The students in my classroom are second language learners from a variety of countries around the world.

Many come with no supplies. They are not only learning a new language but must keep up with grade level academic expectations.

All of the students in our district receive free or reduced-price lunch, and 89% of them are classified as coming from low-income families. Please consider helping my students have what they need to be successful.

My Project

My fifth graders can read and comprehend well in their first language. As they are learning English as their second language, they will need books at a lower readability level that are interesting and will keep their interest.

The lower level books that we have to use here are too juvenile for students who are in fifth grade.

The content is very young, too. That is why the Nonfiction Newsstand selections will fit so well into our reading and comprehension work. The vivid pictures and factual information will make it more appealing for my students to continue to practice learning English without making them feel inadequate next to their peers.
