Hey everyone! My name is Lauren and I am a special education teacher at La Mesa Elementary in Monterey! My classroom is composed of students with mild/moderate learning needs. The grade levels that I work with include kindergarten through 3rd grade. Many of my students have needs in auditory, visual, memory, physical, attention and emotional processing. I'm so thankful to be working with these students because we start at their confidence level and can continue to build on their skills in math and language arts.
My special day class is different than other day classes because we push into the general education classrooms so that we can work with typical grade level peers.
My students are able to participate with their peers in PE, library, science, music, art, recess, lunch, science fair, and plays. It is important that my students are included in their school community so that they know they are part of a larger group and that their peers know that all students should be included in the community. In a school setting, it's important that all students get the materials they need to fuel their education.
My Project
These will be my classroom’s first iPads. Teachers and students love the variety of apps for math, vocabulary and reading that students may use for independent work. Apps, of course, have adaptive features so it’s easy for a student to be working at his or her own level.
On the iPads, my students will be able to access their own leveled reading and math that will help them towards their annual IEP goals.
My students will have access to apps including: Prodigy (math), Zearn (math), Mystery Science (ELA, science), iReady (ELA study games) and Freckle (math). As their teacher, I will be able to place them in their own specific academic level for each app and students can independently work on skills that will improve, review or repeat for their understanding of the subject content. These designated times working on the iPads will help improve my students academic levels and ultimately get them closer to their individualized education plan goals.
In addition, the iPads will help fuel the student's 21st century tech learning skills. Students will be able to use the iPads to show their learning through creating slideshows, green screen videos, and stop motion videos- just to name a few. These skills can create special moments in the student's lives.
