When my students walked into the room and saw the packages, their faces lit up with curiosity and excitement. We opened the packages at the end of the day, they whispered excitedly to their neighbors at the sight of the paint, asked if we could use them right away when the chalk was opened, then were puzzled when the shelving pieces were shown. But after explaining what it was, one student exclaimed, \"I won't lose my papers now!\", trilled at the idea. \r\n\r\nWe didn't get to use the chalk that afternoon but the next day we went out and drew on the school grounds, the class writing messages of encouragement to their older buddies, older siblings, and other kids they knew as the big kids finished their difficult state testing. \r\n\r\nThe students then painted butterflies, after learning about how butterflies are still butterflies despite their various colors, and we connected it with how all of the people are on Earth deserve the same love and respect no matter our colors. These calculators have helped provided access for many of my students so that they can master the grade-level standards without the fear and anxiety of making minor computational errors. \r\n\r\nUsing these tools has helped my students and on the state assessment, 57% of the students were proficient and they told me that because they had been using the calculators all year, they knew the steps they needed to do in order to answer the questions when in the past they avoided the work because it was too hard.
