This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you rely on spell check? My students are very challenged spellers. With writing being the last area to develop in a second language learner, my students are doubly challenged. My students get sounds and letters mixed up with their native language. I would like to provide my students hands-on tools.

My students are from immigrant families, speaking one language at home, then coming to school and learning English.

I need to provide a rich learning environment so my students can truly absorb all the English they can in 8 hours each day. I know that giving students a hands-on experience helps them store knowledge in long-term memory.

My Project

Research shows that spelling and writing are the last to develop in second language learners. I am trying to help my students improve their spelling by giving them hands-on tools to learn how to spell. Giving them ways to put spelling patterns in their long-term memories will help them master spelling. In turn they will become better readers and writers because they know more words.

My project is important because everyone needs basic spelling and writing skills to be successful adults.

With the increased rigor of testing, students need basic spelling skills to read harder materials and write better essays. Please help me purchase word building games to help my students learn to spell.
