My Students

For most of us, reading is an easy and enjoyable pastime, but not so for many of my struggling readers.

My school is in Southern California, and reflects the diversity of the area with many students having Spanish, Korean, Arabic, Chinese or Vietnamese as their home language.

Many of my junior high school students are English Language Learners or are below level in literacy skills, and reading has been a pain, rather than a pleasure, for them.

My Project

This is where Beowulf comes to the rescue. Modern author, Robert Nye has taken the ancient Anglo Saxon story of Beowulf and put it in the vernacular, making it much easier for a junior high school student to read, understand, and enjoy. Even my lowest level readers perk up at the mention of Grendel grabbing and eating warriors by the clawful. This story has it all---suspense, imagery, horror, monsters, battles, and, of course, heroes. Nye's version has been holding my students' attention for years, but unfortunately, my well-loved books have not lasted nearly as long as this classic tale. It is time to start replacing many of my books, and even though I encourage students to buy their own copy of Beowulf, very few have the money to do so. Through the years I have found that Beowulf: a New Telling, by Robert Nye is a perfect book to hook those so called, non-readers and to strengthen struggling readers. My students need 90 copies of Robert Nye's book Beowulf-a New Telling.

Beowulf shows my students that determination, goodness and even a bit of human frailty still qualify one as a hero.

They can relate to him and realize they, too, can overcome obstacles in their own lives, even the obstacle of illiteracy.
