Helping to Focus

Help me give my students some well needed stress relief through arts and crafts. The Post-It paper to focus our conversations, while we decorate fans that the students can keep.

My Students

Our high school is the only public high school located in the city of Wilmington. Sadly, many of our students have experienced trauma in their lives and are learning how to overcome these experiences. For many of our students the traditional high school setting did not work for them. Our recent focus is teaching mindfulness to our students.

My Project

In a previous project, I got a small amount of the "Mad Mattr." It has been a class favorite to my surprise. It is kinetic sand that can take different shapes - without being messy. So many students come in and ask to play with the sand as they work. It really has increased their focus as it gives them something to manipulate with their hands as they work.

Students come in the classroom with a world of burden on their shoulders.

Through small crafts students can break down some of their barriers and get to know others in their class through real conversations. This is what I hope to also accomplish with decorating the fans and with the Post-It board to present talking points. It gets them off of their phone and into discussions that can facilitate change.

Students are sometimes missing opportunities to communicate with one another in a positive way. It is good to be able to foster these positive learning scenarios. It also helps the students know they can come to me with other issues they experience. Please help us engage in conversation!
