Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The purpose of NHS is to honor students who have excelled in scholarship, leadership, service and character. The 2019-2020 NHS chapter’s scope of focus is community betterment through community service and humantiarianisn efforts. My National Honor Society students are either from low income neighborhoods or from the military base which means they are used to moving a lot, taking care of themselves, and getting hand-me-downs. Many of my students have experienced or are experiencing housing and/or food insecurity. However, my NHS students are filled with a passion for humanitariansim, and do everything they can to give back to their communites. They show a kindness I rarely see in adults!
My students are motivated to help those in need and are willing to put in the hard work it takes to before and afterschool as well as on the weekends.
This school year alone we have been able to donate over 2,000 sandwiches to the Rescue Mission in North Las Vegas, conduct 6 park pick-ups at local parks, and members have donated over 1,000 hours of community services to the NLV community. We are looking to fund our humanitarianism efforts and NHS presences in local, state, and national conferences.
My Project
Our NHS chapter’s scope of focus is community betterment through community service. This year alone we have been able to donate over 2,000 sandwiches to the Rescue Mission in North Las Vegas, conduct 6 park pick-ups at local parks, and members have donated over 1,000 hours of community services to the NLV community. We would like to expand our operations to directly impact our community and our school population by supporting community programs that support low income and homelss familes.
Help us host our 1st annual Dinner & Silent auction to raids funds for our community better projects which include continuing to support the Rescue Mission, creating back-to-school packs for Mojave students in dire need of supplies, and purchasing supplies to make park pick-ups more efficient.
We would also like the opportunity to present and attend the annual NHS Zone Conference to share our projects and experiences in order to inspire chapters across the state so students are able to qualify for NHS college scholarships. With 100% of my students on free or reduced lunch from low-income homes, this event has historically been unachievable due to the $39 cost per student.
