Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

You could help a student graduate! It has been reported that the number one predictor of whether a student will graduate or not is whether or not they pass Algebra. I am doing everything in my power to help my students access the main ideas of Algebra. I have many second language learners and socio-economically disadvantaged students. When students come to me they need help, and I need your help.

I ask my students to use colored board markers in Algebra in order to see more quickly and easily the many numbers and symbols. For example, if I work out a simple problem of using the point-slope formula, it is hard for the students to find the proper numbers to replace the given variables. But if I make the x-value green, and its variable green, then students have an easier time seeing and remembering where the value came from and where to substitute it in. The students use the colored markers also when they come to the board. Color coding has helped many of my English learners and resource students, access the curriculum. In addition, I tutor students after school. But it is difficult to work on many topics at once. Fortunately, our text book came with tutorials on DVD. Having some students use headphones to listen to a lesson in tutoring lets me help more students at a time.

Colored expo markers get used up very quickly. Any donation of colored markers helps. And we have no DVD player for the tutorials. Anything you can do to help is appreciated.
