Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it." -Marian Wright Edelman
Our school, although high performing, is part of a Title I district where a majority of students are under-performing.
Since the students at our individual school perform well on state tests, we are not given extra or additional funds for supplies that are provided to our neighboring schools. Our school is K-8 and services a variety of diverse learners. I work with four different grade levels of students, both boys and girls, who struggle or need some extra support in reading. Therefore, I must ask for your help!
My Project
To be successful when learning to read children need to understand that letters, either individually or in combination with others, make certain sounds. These sounds then blend together to make words which we then string together to make sentences. I work with small groups of children who have yet to master these concepts, helping them build these foundational skills. One literacy goal our district has is to have all children proficient in reading by the third grade. In order to accomplish this, I need supplemental materials to help me as I work towards increasing the level of fluency in my students, and ultimately working towards improving their overall comprehension, too. I am requesting two Kindle Fire tablets where I can upload books at various reading levels, and educational apps and games to help inspire the love of reading in my students. They look at this technology as a special treat, and forget that they are actually learning while playing.
It's important to use a balanced approach when teaching reading, especially to young children who do not master the concepts initially.
Having access to technology that provides a variety of learning platforms will help me tremendously as I work with the different levels of students who make up our reading groups at our school. With your help and generosity, my project will become a reality. Thank you for honoring my students with your donation today!
