My Students

I teach in an urban, public school district. My students are primarily African-American and Hispanic. We are a Title I school and all students receive a free federally funded breakfast and lunch. Our students are mostly bused in from throughout the city and do not get to spend time together with each other after school. Your donation will help me to lower the cost for each student attending by $50, making it affordable to them and allowing me to fill the bus to capacity! They are very social, perhaps because they do not see each other after school or during the summer; it makes for a special group of children because they want to spend time together.

Our school does an excellent job of building a desire to learn in our students and our kids continually impress me with their ability to rise to the occasion when challenged.

Students come to school with all the problems that urban middle schoolers do, but they also look to excel academically and help to make our community an enjoyable place to be.

My Project

I teach social studies in an urban district. We share 2 partially full Chromebook carts between 5 middle school classes. The 2 language arts classes, and then the math and science classes seem to rate a little (a lot) higher than social studies because there is no state mandated test for history in our state. The other classes always seem to be dominating the computers and students in my classes lack the ability to complete online research of societal or historical connections to relevant topics of the day.

Textbooks are not going to be able to teach my students about pandemics when they eventually return to school in the future, they need to be online to examine the social, psychological, economical and historical ramifications of current events.

If I had this Chromebook already, I would have lent it to a needy student for the duration. Anyway, I received an iPad last school year from a DonorsChoose project and I look to make this new device the second of an arsenal that my students may use. Thank you for your consideration.
