I am a music teacher at 2 elementary schools in the South Side of Chicago where I teach music to over 600 enthusiastic young musicians. The student population at the schools is diverse and representative of Chicago. Music classes for students in grades K-8 include listening to and evaluating music in addition to singing, movement activities, and performing on instruments. I also teach all students about the theoretical and historical aspects of music at an age appropriate level.
An essential part of all music classes is listening to and analyzing music. In the upcoming year I would like to have a music listening center in the classroom where students could go and listen to music of various genres, styles, and composers. Eventually this music listening center will include classical music, Jazz, world music, early childhood music, and electronic music. While at the music listening center, students would analyze and describe music, identify instruments, recognize musical elements in music, and complete other listening activities.
In order to make this music listening center a reality I am requesting a listening center, the Hip Hop Alphabop CD, the Laura Berkner Buzz CD, and the Shake Rattle N'Read CD. The requested items will be used in lessons planned along the National Music Education Standards and will be reused by music students at my schools for years. Thank you for your generosity!
