Help Us Learn About Lunar New Year

Help me give my students informative books, copies of Flat Stanley's Flying Chinese Wonders, rice cakes, chopsticks, and noodles.

My Project

I need these books and resources for my students. Our public library is too far away, and our school library lacks the books we need. My students desperately need the materials from this project to have an introduction to this important festival. Many of my students have never celebrated Lunar New Year.

I plan to use the books and resources from this project to begin to teach my students about the Lunar New Year and cultural diversity.

Jimmy Carter once said, "We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic … different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams" and my students need to learn to celebrate that mosaic of diversity.

I will begin by sharing these picture books with my second graders. We will talk about food, rice, bread, and celebrations. Then we will read & discuss Flat Stanley's Worldwide Adventures/The Flying Chinese Wonders. Each child will get a copy of the book as well as stickers and fortune cards. My students will learn about the zodiac animals and different calendars. Finally, we will have a classroom Lunar New Year celebration with rice cakes, noodles, and fortune cookies! From the resources on the Panda Cub site, students will learn to make paper fortune cookies, write a haiku poem, and color a bookmark. Then, students will get special 2025 snake fortune coins to commemorate this learning adventure.

I need these books and resources for my students. We do not have the funds for this type of project. Please help us!
