Not only have we developed 21st century skills but it turned out to be a service learning project as well. Of course none of this would have been possible with the generosity and support of amazing people like yourselves.\r\n\r\nWhen Typhoon Halong hit our coast and suddenly two full villages of people were left with nothing and their world was turned upside down instantly, I never once stopped to think about what the costs would be. My students and myself immediately started making toys for the evacuees in the course of less then two weeks running 24/7 we made over 350 of them (really we lost count after this). This of course exhausted our supply of filament and we didn't care but you were generous enough to resupply us.\r\n\r\nI say all this to let you know that in less then two weeks we got 92 kids and the first thing that they connected to was the toys they had received and seeing where they were made. This has led to some amazing connections and once in a life time opportunities. The students who received the earlier toys used our class to hang out when having a hard time. They have been earning additional prints, making their own 3D deigns and asking for items to be printed that they could give to someone else since someone gave them something. It was awesome learning about what they call different things versus what we call them. \r\n\r\nAlthough I never would have expected the amazing connections that have formed for a lifetime or the cross cultural (literally a village to the city) learning that has occurred, I would not have changed anything we have done. Who knew that with such a small gesture you were able to give students who wold never have been able to experience things like 3D Printing the chance to do so. All I can say is that you have made my students and my new kids live so much better. Everyone wants to say Quyana Tailuci (The Yup'ik Language for Thank You So Very Much) for this incredible opportunity.","fullyFundedDate":1766042764669,"projectUrl":"project/filament-for-creating-fantastic-3d-creat/9811702/","projectTitle":"Filament For Creating Fantastic 3D Creations!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Therriault","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2577145_orig.png?crop=398,398,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1598245604934","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2577145"},{"teacherId":2577145,"projectId":9486859,"letterContent":"So what do you do when you already have a great book series about twisted fairy tales and you need to get a totally new group of kids hooked on reading. Clearly you have to find a new way to do that. With your incredible generosity and support I was able to do just that with my students.\r\n\r\nSince we received two new book series from you, The Thirteenth Fairy series (I highly recommend reading this if you haven't and like twisted fairy tales) and the Reform School Series. First came the hook (pun intended as one character is related to Captain Hook) these books are about what happens to the villains, and the main character in this series is oh wait for it a boy. \"What are you for real?\" that was the hook I needed. Everyone was guessing what happened and what would happen next.\r\n\r\nSince these books were so incredible and since I had started an entire unit of fractured fairy tales with my other books I decided to add to it. This has become a passion project where the students are currently working on teaser movie trailers about each book. This will then be used to introduce the books to next years students. Not sure how I will top this but I am so incredibly grateful to be given a chance to expose my students to technology and an incredible set of two book series.\r\n\r\nWithout the generosity of incredible donors like you I would not have opportunities for my students to develop 21st century skills and to find a passion for reading more then graphic novels. These materials are amazing and have already been so helpful for my students. We are having so much fun. Our favorite new toy is the play kitchen. It took me staying late after work to set it up, but it was well worth it when my students came in the next morning. They could hardly wait until center time to go play. The buttons on the stove and cabinet doors make pretend cooking so much fun. The other toys have been a big hit as well. They love to practice their sorting skills on the play food. One student ran to the \"veterinary station\" the moment it was set up, put on a stethoscope, and began treating the little cat and dog for all sorts of ailments. Our new toys also give me the opportunity to keep some things on rotation, so there is always something new for my students to explore. They used to get restless at the end of center time, bored with our minimal toys. Not anymore! Now they don't want it to end. They are having such fun, they don't even realize how much they are learning! While they play, they are building so many foundational skills that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. Because of your generosity, our Student Council was able to create an experience that brought so much joy and excitement to our entire school community. The smiles on our students' faces were unforgettable and a true reflection of the impact you made.\r\n\r\nWhat made this event even more special was the learning that came along with it. Students eagerly counted the eggs they purchased and calculated how many golden tickets they earned. Golden tickets gave them a chance to become \"Principal for the Day,\" while red tickets awarded invitations to a pizza party. The energy throughout the school was incredible—there was a constant buzz of excitement.\r\n\r\nOne particularly touching moment was when a member of our community purchased two eggs for every student, ensuring that no one was left out. It was an extraordinary act of kindness. Your generosity helped inspire that moment, and it's amazing to see how that spirit of giving spread.\r\n\r\nBeyond the fun, this experience gave our Student Council members valuable, real-world learning opportunities. They practiced organization, responsibility, money management, honesty, and customer service. They were so excited and could not wait to use it. They were even more excited when they found out that their Little Buddies were getting one too. Super bonus when we can share with another class.\r\n\r\nFast forward to the set up process. Oh boy was this a learning curve. The experience was amazing for the students and led to many different skills being used that they were not aware they had. \"Wait I think I know how this could fit.\" \"Did you read the directions?\" \"I can't they are not in English, oh wait we can figure them out.\" This may have led to a discussion about translating apps and flipping the paper over to see English but hey they were still trying to solve the problem. The best part of this was that they worked through big emotions and learned how to deal with them not blow up.\r\n\r\nWhen it came to the water bottles WOW! they were a huge hit and a super big deal because they were color changing (ok not really they were a gradient effect but still they were excited and we had an art lesson out of the curiosity.) We had to have a water bottle decorating party to make our water bottles our own. With new water bottles in hand a whole lot less learning was lost and we were also able to stay hydrated at PE which \"left some water for the fishes\" since we didn't have to spend forever at the drinking fountain.\r\n\r\nOf course none of this would be possible without your generosity. The students were very frustrated and would opt to use white paper instead of the white board because it was easier to see.\r\n\r\n\"What, are you kidding me\" \"We can see\" these were amongst the statements that were made when the students got to unbox the new double sided white boards. They immediately started practicing their basic math facts and giving each other challenge problems. They were particularly thrilled with the fact neither them nor myself now had to try to draw a coordinate grid for math. The think they are so cool when they get to use the giant grid and move the pieces or manipulate it to show their work.\r\n\r\nWait there is more. We were doing a unit on colonization and they were about to hold an auction. \"STOP, we now have cool little paddles I bet we could use them to place our bids\" Never would have seen that coming. They were problem solving and excited to use \"old fashioned technology like they did in colonial times\" Ok so they maybe didn't use white board paddles back then but they made a real world connection to how things were done before today. \r\n\r\nThe invaluable lightbulb moments that have been happening are what a teacher lives for. The turnout was wonderful, and the atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and full of connection. Our cafe' lights were a big hit!\r\n\r\nWe are especially grateful for the encouraging message you shared with us: \"Be kind, study hard, do good things.\" We proudly hung your message at our café, and it served as a meaningful reminder of the values guiding this work. Your words truly set the tone for the morning. It was touching to also see students write these words down in their journals. It really touched my heart!\r\n\r\nThis experience was more than just hosting an event. The six girls on our Parent Café Committee learned what it means to take a vision and turn it into reality. From planning and organizing to welcoming families, they experienced firsthand how leadership, teamwork, and determination can bring an idea to life. The process strengthened their confidence and showed them the power they have to create positive change. We met every Tuesday for a month before setting out to make our dream come true!\r\n\r\nBeyond our committee, this event helped build meaningful connections within our school community alongside our Native families. It created a space of belonging, conversation, and shared experience — something we are incredibly proud of.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in our vision and investing in our students and families. Your generosity made this special experience possible, and its impact will continue far beyond this first café. We are already looking forward to the next cafe'. We are planning on doing one a month. The characters are doing fun, interesting, and relatable activities in the stories. My students can connect to the stories and care about what's happening. From a teaching standpoint, the books very intentionally target specific phonics skills. I can introduce a skill, and then we get a chance to practice it with multiple books that use that skill.\r\n\r\nIt's also been so great to have a LARGE inventory of books to draw from.
