Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in the South End with very strong ties in the community. Many students are the second or third in their family to go through the school, strengthening the bond between teachers, students and families.
Most of our student and family population are living at or below the poverty line.
Our population consists of general education, special needs, and English Language Learner students. Combined with a district looking to make very significant and detrimental budget cuts, we find that we are often in need of looking to creative solutions to supplement what we lack for materials and supplies.
My Project
Kids always learn best when they have hands on experiences to help take ownership of their learning. I want to help bring learning to life and foster excitement about science, and believe this project will do just that. Science is a subject that is often pushed aside in favor of more time for ELA and math, and having an exciting project will not only help focus attention on science learning, but will also set up a steadier pace for integrating science into the classroom.
By learning about the life cycle of chickens, first with the literature, and then by studying and monitoring the growth process of the eggs, students will be able to see a real life model of what is illustrated in the books.
Kids will take ownership over their learning by having roles in monitoring egg development.
This equipment will allow us to create the process of growing and hatching chicks, by using an incubator to warm and grow the embryos. By using the document cameras, we can track their progress each day, using the literature to hypothesize what life stage they are in currently. We will track this growth on the "Chick Development Chart", all the while using thermometers to measure their heat and make sure we're creating a safe environment. Finally, students will use the chick feeding set to nurture and care for the chicks before they are returned to the farm. Throughout this process, students will have a chance to strengthen their writing skills, as they will be asked to create and take on the persona of a chick, and write diary entries from their point of view.
