My students need 30 copies of the third book in the "Hunger Games" series, "Mockingjay". These struggling readers asked to read the whole series. Please help!
Remember reading the first book that grabbed your attention and made you a lifelong reader? For my students, it was The Hunger Games. These reluctant readers were so engaged, they asked to finish the series, even buying Catching Fire on their own. Please help us buy Mockingjay so we can finish!
My class of EAP students struggle with both reading and writing and are taking a second English class to support those skills.
For reluctant readers, engagement is everything, so reading a high-interest novel was exciting for them, and allowed for some great discussion and learning. Feeling successful during our reading of The Hunger Games was new for many of my students, and I want to keep that momentum going.
My Project
At the start of the year, many of these 9th grade students bragged that they had never finished a book before, but as they got into the novel, The Hunger Games, they were legitimately interested in the story and characters, and wanted to keep reading more. They showed their motivation by all contributing money to purchase their own copies of Catching Fire (book 2 in the series). They really want to finish the final book, and are now bragging about reading a whole series. These are great kids who just needed a nudge in the right direction, and now are on their way to becoming lifelong readers.
Having someone take interest in them is surprising for these students.
They couldn't believe that I had purchased the class set of The Hunger Games and that I wanted them to read it enough to spend my own money. That gave them motivation to really try, and they learned that reading could be exciting. This will not only impact my current students, but my future classes as well.
