Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a kindergarten classroom that includes thirty students, some of whom have special needs and language barriers and require specially designed instruction. As kindergartners, my students are naturally excited about school and eager to learn. They are full of energy and keep me on my toes all day!
Our school is in a high-poverty urban neighborhood where all of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Most of my students are unable to attend high-quality pre-school programs, which can leave them at a disadvantage starting school. No matter where they start, it is my job to get my students where they need to be. I try my best to create a fun learning environment that keeps my students engaged, encourages them to express their creativity, and allows them to live up to their greatest potential.
My Project
Storytelling is an amazing literacy skill for a child to posses. It encompasses creativity, imagination, listening, speaking, and self expression. And when a puppet is put onto a child's hand a whole new world of opportunity emerges!I am requesting a complete puppet theater for my students that includes multicultural people, animals, and story character puppets, as well as a stage to showcase them.
Storytelling is a wonderful skill for a child to have and puppets have a way of encouraging even the shyest of students to become natural storytellers.
This theater and the puppets will be used for creating and retelling stories in our classroom library, as well as putting on performances. The use of puppets promotes not only literacy skills such as listening and speaking, but also self-expression. It allows students to step outside of themselves and let their guard down a bit so their true imagination and self can be seen. I also believe it will be a great way for my English as a second language students to practice their language skills.
