Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My favorite time of the year is Christmas and definitely back to school time! New crayons, new pencils, new journals and new smiley faces! Unfortunately, the only thing my students bring is their bright smile with an empty backpack.

Every year I run around the stores looking for good deals to stock my closet with school materials.

But in less than 2 months basic school supplies run low! I teach first grade in a modest area in Connecticut. This is the reality in most of our urban schools, teachers end up buying most of the basic materials that students need on a daily basis.

My Project

Several of my learning stations require dry erase markers. For example the word study learning station has dry erase boards so students can either write the spelling words, find rhyming words, find and copy sight words etc. Also, my phonics and word family learning stations require dry erase makers to complete some of the activities. First graders need to use other materials than just the traditional paper and pencil! The journals would be great so students can keep all their work in one place, rather than have loose papers all over! Moreover, we could monitor and actually see their progress better by using a journal. I believe handwriting would also improve since the journals have appropriate lines for first grade.

By coming to school prepared with the basic school materials such as pencils, journals and folders to keep their papers organized my students will learn and value organization skills that will help them succeed later on.

With your help my first graders will be excited to go to their learning stations. They love using dry erase makers and complete the activities from the phonics learning station. This means, they will be more engaged in their learning process while having fun, too.
