Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Children of immigrants or immigrants themselves, my students are challenged economically and academically. They struggle to support their own families through part-time jobs or through household responsibilities. The combination of socioeconomic and academic struggles creates a great challenge for my community of students. Despite their economic hurdles, my students are avid learners who utilize whatever available resources they have to complete objectives. This year alone, they made incredible projects with the limited resources available to them.

My students have had their films accepted into film festivals and have had their work shown on PBS broadcasts nationwide--but we need YOUR help to purchase our first Pro Cinema Camera and lens.

I'm trying to prepare my students for future film and cinematography opportunities and we are being limited by the type of equipment they can use. Currently, my students shoot on consumer video camcorders, the Canon XA25's. We have some Canon Digital Rebel DSLR's as well. The trouble with both is that the Canon XA25 doesn't allow us to change lenses and get that great shallow depth of field that some beautiful shots require. And while the DSLRs are great for those types of shots, they are very cumbersome to use because they are intended as *photo* cameras first and as video cameras second.

I'd like to get the Sony FX30 camera and Tamron 28-70mm lens for my class to give my students the opportunity to get the best of both worlds--a pro cinema camera with interchangeable lenses and a user interface designed for *filming*--not photography. This is an affordable ("affordable" by camera standards) and highly regarded camera that is growing in popularity amongst independent film producers and my students will have a chance to film with it. It would be an incredible opportunity.
