Help me give my students the books they need in their classroom library to enjoy reading. These books represent a diverse variety of options for them to choose for readers' workshop.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I remember staying up late because I just had to read one more page. I remember the first time when I read something that spoke directly to me. My students do not have these memories yet - but they will.
My 9th students have curious minds, big hearts, and bold opinions.
Most travel over an hour everyday on public transportation to get their education. All of my students have a diagnosed learning disability; the majority read between a 5th-6th grade reading level. After years of subpar educational experiences, many of my students have come to dread reading. Why? Simply put, they are being asked to read books far too difficult for them to access. When you are reading at a 5th grade level, being asked to read Fahrenheit 451 is the equivalent of asking the average person to climb Everest. Defeat is all but certain - and they know it.
My Project
This project will help fund a classroom library that will provide my students with a diverse variety of books at their differentiated reading levels. It will fund the purchase of over 100 fiction novels between 6th - 8th grade reading levels. I have included books that my students will find interesting including but not limited to sports novels, girl drama, and minority protagonists. For low-interest readers, I have included several options of graphic novels.
The goal of this project is two-fold: to increase their reading levels and foster a joy of reading.
Everyday, students will participate in readers' workshop. I will teach them a new reading strategy with a model text. Then, students will choose a strategy to focus on while reading the novel they have selected. Students will then have 40 minutes to enjoy their novel and practice their reading strategies. During this time, I will conference 1-on-1 with each student about what is happening in their book. If a student does not like the book they have chosen, they may choose a new book from the library. When they are finished, they will choose a new novel. The more they read, the easier it will become, and the more they will enjoy it!
