This project will help fund a classroom library that will provide my students with a diverse variety of books at their differentiated reading levels. It will fund the purchase of over 100 fiction novels between 6th - 8th grade reading levels. I have included books that my students will find interesting including but not limited to sports novels, girl drama, and minority protagonists. For low-interest readers, I have included several options of graphic novels. The goal of this project is two-fold: to increase their reading levels and foster a joy of reading. Everyday, students will participate in readers' workshop. I will teach them a new reading strategy with a model text. Then, students will choose a strategy to focus on while reading the novel they have selected. Students will then have 40 minutes to enjoy their novel and practice their reading strategies. During this time, I will conference 1-on-1 with each student about what is happening in their book. If a student does not like the book they have chosen, they may choose a new book from the library. When they are finished, they will choose a new novel. The more they read, the easier it will become, and the more they will enjoy it!
