I push my students to take ownership and pride in their work. I do not accept half-hearted attempts in their assignments or projects. I hope to model that attitude of excellence by having high-quality classroom tools that allow the students to engage the world of math in a professional manner.
Our students attend a relatively new high school which was started by heroic and visionary people, is led by strong and determined principals and is staffed by passionate and effective teachers.
Our students are aspirational young people who desire to overcome the cycle of hopelessness, violence and unfulfilled potential that often marks their communities. I teach primarily 10th and 11th grade students who have the ability to quickly discern whether a school, principal or teacher is "all in" (which means that the institution/individual is fully and sacrificially committed to their success). As a result, this past June my 11th grade students informed me that our classroom's 2005 laptop with two missing keys that rests on a computer cart with a permanently crippled back wheel would no longer be acceptable. In a disarmingly calm and matter-of-fact manner, they gave me my summer homework assignment - to bring a professional quality laptop, projector and cart back to our classroom!
All the resources needed for our students to effectively learn math have been created. I run a website, 3to5.net, which curates the best online resources to provide our students with an alternative to increasingly irrelevant textbooks. Our school has licensed software from a few companies, which provides our students with interactive channels for learning (these software applications are particularly helpful in Geometry and Trigonometry, where students often struggle with spatial awareness of two-dimensional figures and 3D objects). A new laptop and projector would help share these tools with our students. On a broader basis, one of my goals is to expand their awareness and access to the current solutions (often rooted in mathematical concepts) that are being developed to address the profound economic and social challenges of our time. With WiFi already setup in my room, a laptop will help us access resources like PBS ScienceNow Documentaries & TED conference technology presentations.
Our society uses the absolute highest quality of human and financial capital to entertain and advertise to our children.
With your help, our school can continue the work of providing the highest quality tools to inspire and inform our children.
