Our students attend a relatively new high school which was started by heroic and visionary people, is led by strong and determined principals and is staffed by passionate and effective teachers. Our students are aspirational young people who desire to overcome the cycle of hopelessness, violence and unfulfilled potential that often marks their communities. I teach primarily 10th and 11th grade students who have the ability to quickly discern whether a school, principal or teacher is "all in" (which means that the institution/individual is fully and sacrificially committed to their success). As a result, this past June my 11th grade students informed me that our classroom's 2005 laptop with two missing keys that rests on a computer cart with a permanently crippled back wheel would no longer be acceptable. In a disarmingly calm and matter-of-fact manner, they gave me my summer homework assignment - to bring a professional quality laptop, projector and cart back to our classroom!
