Help my students recycle discarded binders into handmade sketchbooks

My students need a paper cutter to cut the tag board that we glean from discarded binders.

My Students

We take old, discarded binders, cut them open and create handmade sketchbooks from the tag board. This is a great way to re-use the multitude of binders that are tossed at the end of the year.

My craft students are extremely diverse but they are terrific and get along great with each other.

They *love* making things and I love reusing materials that already exist in abundance such as trash. I really love teaching them about REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE.

My Project

What we do is collect discarded binders, cut them open and use the tag board to create handmade sketchbooks. We need a solid, sharp paper cutter to cut the tag board to the correct size of 9x12. We also use the paper cutter to cut the paper for the pages to the correct size. I was taught how to make the sketchbooks by an art teacher from Monterey High School.

The students in the crafts class make sketchbooks at the beginning of the year and not only does it teach students how books are constructed, it is kept in the classroom all year so that students can sketch inside it when they are finished with other projects and have extra time on their hands.

When the class is over, it serves as the student's scrapbook or journal. Crafts students really dig making their own books.
