My Students

I am a special education teacher and I currently work in a Title I school, consisting of 45% of students who are from low-income households. I work with students who have a variety of disabilities. These include students who have developmental delays, learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, other health impairments, and more. Our staff assesses the students who are struggling and meets as a team to discuss which students need this additional layer of support the most. Then we begin the intervention with them.

My Project

This past summer, I volunteered to be trained during the 2017-2018 school year in a program called “Reading Recovery”. I had heard about it before, but didn’t know much about it when I signed up to take this on. It is a literacy intervention designed to help young students who are behind their peers accelerate their progress in reading and writing. The purpose is to try to close the gap early on. I have been doing Reading Recovery with a first grade student with a developmental delay since the beginning of this school year, and I have seen AMAZING growth. I am now a firm believer in this program after seeing the results firsthand! With that said, since I am new to this program, I do not have many Reading Recovery-approved books to work with. I have been borrowing books from other teachers throughout this school year. If I received this grant, I would love to purchase some more books to start my own Reading Recovery collection of books to use as I continue teaching young students who are struggling to keep up in reading and writing. I need books that will appeal to a variety of interests and levels. Thank you for your time and consideration.
