My students need a simple monochrome laser printer so they can print their essays & projects even when their homes lack a working computer, a printer, or ink.
My students work hard to complete their writing assignments but often are unable to print their finished work because they lack the technology or supplies at home, and our school of 1700 students has one or two printers available to them before or after school.
Students crowd my desk on every essay due date.
"My dad messed up our computer, so I couldn't print my essay. Can I run down to the library?" "I may be a minute late, I'm going to run to the computer lab and print my paper; we're out of ink at home." This is not the behavior of a few, unmotivated students; many of my best writers struggle to bring me drafts and final essays because they lack the equipment to do so. A trip to the library also means 10-15 minutes away from class time.
This project is a follow-on to my second project. I'll be honest: I was new to the site and made and error, but I hope you'll still meet the needs of my students. I just want a basic monochrome laser that I can use for printing student work and for printing make-up work or materials for students. All our printers are on the 1st floor, and my classroom is on the 2nd, at the end of one of the wings. It is a long walk to the student-accessible printers, and we're not allowed to let students use the staff copiers/printers. In my initial project, I tried to get the printer, an extra cartridge, & a few other accessories. I'd never used the outside websites before, and also didn't know how much the extra cartridge would cost, and so I mistook the expensive Lexmark E260 Photoconductor... for the printer. I erroneously posted the incomplete project, which was graciously funded. However, my students still need the printer.
The current situation results in students (a) being late turning in work, (b) missing class time trekking to the library and back, (c) feeling self-conscious about having to admit they don't have a working computer/printer at home, (d) having negative associations with the writing process itself.
This is really such a simple thing that would have a direct impact in improving my students' grades, writing ability, and confidence. I hope you'll forgive my error and help get them the printer they need.Read More
