Our high school is an interesting crossroads of a rural, agricultural area and a small town that has struggled with this economic downturn. Many of my students need to grasp that their lack of material resources or support at home is not a complete impediment to academic success. I see even very bright students give up on the idea of becoming full-time college students. As a kid who went to college on scholarship and Pell grants, it breaks my heart. Our aggressive push for AP can give them hope, but we must prepare them for the rigor and amount of writing.
