My students are looking for a reason to be outstanding. This year, more than ever, my colleagues and I are seeing students give up: give up on assignments, give up on respect, and--my biggest worry--give up on reading.
I'm a firm believer that when a student says that they "don't like to read," they really mean "I don't like the books I've had to read." I'm also a firm believer that students crave choice: something they can control in a time where it seems everything is out of control.
As an English teacher, I'm seeing a disturbing trend. Students are giving up. Reading is giving way to Fortnite and TikTok. I don't have anything against these things outright, but reading can't disappear altogether because of them!
Why not let students have a device to quickly and easily introduce them to thousands of great books?
After all, the reason students don't read isn't because they don't like reading -- it's because they haven't found the right book. COVID has made students more intertwined with technology. There's no reason we can't meet that with great books!
